Andrew Brown 'Was Not a Threat,' Family Lawyer Says

Later viewing a redacted but more than extensive clamper of the recordings, they and their legal team came to the same conclusion they had earlier: The footage, they said, did non testify Mr. Brownish threatening, or even making contact with, law enforcement officers as he tried to flee in his car as deputies attempted to detain him.
This account of events does little to resolve the two very unlike versions of what the recordings of the episode — which have not been made public — purportedly show. In an April xxx court hearing, R. Andrew Womble, the local district chaser, said that the video footage he reviewed shows Mr. Chocolate-brown'south car making contact with deputies equally he tried to drive abroad.
This contention is potentially crucial to any case confronting the three Pasquotank Canton sheriff's deputies who shot at Mr. Brown on April 21. Their fate may hinge on the question of whether Mr. Brown'due south manner of driving posed a credible threat to their safety.
Mr. Brown's family members viewed the footage privately Tuesday afternoon in a government building in Elizabeth City, N.C., a majority-Blackness city of about eighteen,000 residents where Mr. Brown, who had a history of drug-related arrests, grew up and lived. Protesters there have taken to the streets, repeatedly and peacefully, to denounce the shooting, calling it an act of law brutality, and demanding that officials make public the total 2 hours of body and dash camera video.
In Due north Carolina, however, such videos tin can exist released to the public simply with a judge's blessing. At the April 30 hearing, Gauge Jeffrey B. Foster agreed with Mr. Womble that the footage should not be immediately released, citing, amongst other things, concerns almost the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

"There were so many shots that we found difficulty in counting the number of shots that his vehicle received," Mr. Lynch said. "At some point there was a final shot, where it appeared that at that final shot Mr. Brown lost control."
The motorcar then traveled across the street and striking a tree.
No weapons were constitute in the auto, Mr. Lynch said. "My friends, I would suggest to you that information technology was absolutely and unequivocally unjustified," he said of the shooting.
In an e-mail Monday, Mr. Womble, the prosecutor, said he would not exist commenting farther on the trunk camera footage "until I reach a charging conclusion," because doing and so could run afoul of state bar association rules.
